About me
My artistic journey began unexpectedly, sparked by a gift from my Uncle Steve over twenty years ago. He showed me how to use a magnifying glass to focus sunlight and create designs on wood. I found the process incredibly calming and noticed that focusing on controlling the light beam helped steady my hands, which tend to twitch due to a mild form of Tourette's.
In later years I found people were intrigued with my wood burnings, and I decided this is something special that I can do for the rest of my life. My art is special and I hope it brings joy to many.

My Process
My art often begins with the wood itself. A unique grain or knot might inspire a design that fits perfectly. Otherwise, I generally start by creating a line drawing on the wood, either freehand or traced with carbon paper. Then, I carefully burn the design using sunlight and a magnifying glass. Before sealing the art with a clear coat, I meticulously sand away any smudges or over-burns with superfine sandpaper. Finally, I add details like hangers, silicone feet for trivets, twine for ornaments, or wire, beads, and buttons for butterfly wall hangings, depending on the piece's intended presentation.

Unique Approach
What sets ELK Solar Art apart is my exclusive use of sunlight and a magnifying glass for pyrography. While many pyrographers rely on modern wood-burning tools, I embrace the traditional, more sustainable method. I aim to create pieces that bring joy and comfort to people through unique and custom designs on wood.
